Senate approves two bills to toughen drunk driving penalties

The state Senate signed off today on two bills that would stiffen the penalties for drunk driving, including one that would set a minimum mandatory sentence of five years for those convicted of an OWI homicide. The bill includes an exception to the five-year minimum if a court finds a compelling reason for a lighter sentence and places its reasons on the record. The Department of Corrections estimated the bill in its original form would add $525,1000 annually in agency costs to house additional offenders. The bill, which cleared on a voice vote, now heads to the guv’s desk. Meanwhile,

Senate rejects Pfaff nomination along party lines

With Tony Evers watching from the wings, the state Senate today voted along party lines Tuesday to reject the nomination of Brad Pfaff as DATCP secretary. Fitzgerald says Senate moving ahead with Pfaff vote, doubts GOP members will support DATCP leader

Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, said today the Senate will move ahead with a planned vote on the nomination of Brad Pfaff to serve as DATCP secretary. The guv’s administration, ag groups and others made a furious push to at least delay a vote on the nomination after Fitzgerald’s office indicated Friday he had asked Gov. Tony Evers to withdraw the nomination. Fitzgerald declined to predict what the final vote would be on Pfaff’s nomination. But he said he didn’t see any of his members supporting his nomination. With a 19-14 GOP majority, three Republican members would have to join
