West sues state to be put on Wisconsin presidential ballot

Entertainer Kanye West on Friday sued to force his way onto Wisconsin’s presidential ballot after the state Elections Commission ruled he turned in his nomination papers late. As it was when the commission rejected West’s nomination papers, the key issue of the lawsuit is what the state’s deadline of “not later than 5 p.m.” means under Wisconsin law. The suit, filed in Brown County Circuit Court, argued the cutoff is actually when the clock strikes 5:01 p.m. and the papers were turned over at 14 seconds past 5 p.m. as an attorney representing his campaign walked into the building that

MADISON – The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin today urged Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Joshua Kaul to investigate—or appoint a special counsel to investigate—and, if warranted, prosecute any crimes and civil rights violations committed against protesters, journalists, medics, legal observers, and others by federal, state, or local law enforcement. Two Kenosha police officers deployed Tasers against Jacob Blake before he was shot seven times in the back, the state Department of Justice said Friday in an update on its investigation.  The update also provides other details on the officers responding to the call Sunday. But it doesn’t detail whether officers knew Blake had a knife before he was shot.  According to the update, Officer Rusten Sheskey used his Taser in an effort to stop Blake after an initial attempt to arrest him. When Sheskey’s attempt failed, Officer Vincent Arenas also deployed his Taser but also failed to stop Blake.
