MADISON– Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement following the general election results for Wisconsin’s 16th Senate District:

“I am truly honored to be chosen by voters as the next State Senator for the 16th Senate District. This campaign was powered by the people who have gone above and beyond in organizing, advocating, and coming out to the polls in record numbers to build a better future. The message from the voters is clear– we need proven, progressive, and pragmatic leadership in the Wisconsin State Legislature. It is humbling to succeed Senator Mark Miller who has been a progressive champion in the legislature for the past two decades. I will do all I can to live up to his legacy of fighting for positive change.

Now more than ever, residents across Wisconsin are asking for our government leaders to take meaningful action to ensure that Wisconsin is a state where everyone is safe, can reach for their dreams, and where we invest in a better tomorrow. As a lifelong resident of Dane County and single-mother of four boys, I am proud to be a voice for Wisconsinites, and am committed to working to find innovative, long-term solutions for our state.

Whether it be COVID-19 response efforts, addressing the disparities and inequities in our state, or beyond, I will continue to support policies that ensure the health and safety of families across Wisconsin. And I am proud to continue leading on issues that will have a positive impact on people like raising the minimum wage, investing in public education, quality health care for all, addressing disparities and inequalities, reducing gun violence, and legalizing cannabis. In the State Senate, I will continue to work to serve the many, rather than the few.””
