Madison – On Friday, State Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) issued the following statement after unemployment in our state nears 400,000.
“Since Governor Evers won’t release what numbers he is using as a rationale for extending the state shutdown until May 26th, I hope he sees this number. Nearly 400,000 Wisconsinites are now out of work.
Extending his ‘Safer at Home’ order with no guidance on why will destroy main street Wisconsin. Small businesses throughout the state cannot operate through uncertainty. The environment he is creating will mean even more people may lose their job.

The governor has an opportunity to give people hope by communicating a smart and safe reset to our economy. Our healthcare leaders and business community are ready to lend their expertise and I hope he finally starts to work with them. Right now it only seems he’s outsourcing that to states like Illinois and Michigan and extending the shutdown without evidence.

Governor Evers knows the authority to extend the shutdown to May 26th is unlawful. He will be legally challenged on that. It’s time for him to recognize that hundreds of thousands of people in our state are suffering because of the inability to communicate his rational and his refusal to take the next step to move Wisconsin forward.”

Senator Darling represents portions of Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha Counties.
