WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) today released the following statement after the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL), along with CEI and Power the Future, published a report detailing the disastrous impact the Green New Deal would have on Wisconsin’s economy. The report estimates that the proposal would result in $200 million in losses to Wisconsin farmers, $2.5 billion in costs to Wisconsin’s dairy industry, and would increase household costs by 75,000 in year one.

“Today’s report makes clear that the Green New Deal isn’t just unrealistic, it’s a slap in the face to every Wisconsin farmer, family, and business owner,” said Rep. Gallagher. “In normal times, a proposal that would rapidly destroy agriculture and other critical sectors of our economy, cost trillions of dollars, and leave hardworking families to foot the bill would be a nonstarter. It’s insane to think this has become the latest call to action for many of my colleagues.

“Let’s be clear: reducing carbon emissions, conserving our natural resources, and promoting economic growth are not mutually exclusive goals. Right here in Northeast Wisconsin, farmers, conservationists, and a number of stakeholders are coming together and leading the world in things like farm conservation and sustainable water practices that benefit both the environment and farmers’ bottom lines. The federal government would do right to support their common sense efforts, not tear them down with a one-size-fits-all government mandate.”
