MILWAUKEE – Earnell Lucas, Milwaukee County Sheriff and candidate for mayor of Milwaukee, today issued the following statement regarding Senator Johnson’s radical remarks regarding Wisconsin elections:

“The core of our democracy rests in free and open elections. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson recently used his position to further promote conspiracy theories to divide our neighbors across the state by calling on Republicans in the state Legislature to unilaterally take over federal elections.

“As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he has called on Republican leaders to ‘ignore the work of the bipartisan [Wisconsin] Elections Commission’ in an effort to have the authority to overturn election results.

“As the mayor of Milwaukee, I will not sit idly by and watch these attempts to overturn the will of the people, and further divide our nation. Senator Johnson is a leader in conspiracy rhetoric and divisive behavior that serve nothing other than his own political agenda.

“Further, as Milwaukee County’s sheriff, I condemn the behavior and remarks of Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling who, like Senator Johnson, has promoted conspiracy theories and misinformation when he stated that election officials should be charged with felonies. I agree with Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul – the sheriff’s comments are nothing more than a publicity stunt.

“As Milwaukee’s next mayor, I will be a strong voice to promote an open and free democracy, a robust republic, and ensure that every vote that is cast is done so with ease.

“President Joe Biden won the 2020 election by seven million votes. We’re far past the time of people like Senator Johnson needing to acknowledge that, sometimes, elections have consequences when people’s voices are heard.”
