Rep. Stubbs: Statement on Highland Park shooting

MADISON, WI – After the mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, Representative Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement: “Will this happen in Madison?’. This is the thought I have after every mass shooting in our country. The ongoing investigation into the Highland Park shooting shows that Madison could have been the next stop for this particular mass shooter. Without meaningful action, the question will no longer be ‘will’ this happen to our city, but ‘when’ will it happen.” “On July 4th, I happily attended parades in my district on the West Side of Madison.  At these events, I saw children, families, and

Voces de la Frontera Action: As legal threats challenge the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), Wisconsin DACA recipients speak out to demand permanent protections

(Milwaukee, Wisc).- Today, a three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit heard arguments in Texas v. United States, challenging the legality of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. According to the National Immigration Law Center,  Texas v. United States is the first time the merits of the 2012 DACA policy will be heard by a Circuit Court of Appeals. The timing of the Fifth Circuit decision is uncertain; in the past, the Fifth Circuit has issued opinions anywhere from a few weeks to several months after oral arguments are heard. According to legal experts,

WisDems: Reminder, Wisconsin Republicans in Congress voted against protecting pensions

MADISON, Wis. – Today, as President Biden announces a new American Rescue Plan rule that will protect millions of Americans’ pensions – particularly those who would otherwise have seen substantial cuts to their benefits – voters deserve to know that every Wisconsin Republican in Congress voted against this fix. “While Republican politicians have advocated for a plan that could end the Social Security and Medicare guarantee and put Wisconsinites’ hard-earned benefits on the chopping block, President Biden and Democrats are working to protect Wisconsin retirees and the benefits they spent years earning,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Julia Hamelburg.  This new

Madison Mayor Rhodes-Conway: Reacts to news about Highland Park suspect’s trip to Madison area

First, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the entire community in Highland Park who are mourning those killed and trying to heal from this horrific event.  Today’s news that the suspected shooter traveled to Madison and contemplated violence here is deeply disturbing and only underscores the fact that we need a national approach to dealing with gun violence. Weapons of war have no place in our communities.  While I appreciate the bipartisan agreement reached last week, Congress must pass common sense gun safety laws to protect our communities. Assault weapons and

Sen. Marklein: Capitol update, inflationary reality

Inflation and rising costs are the most universal concerns I am hearing from residents of the 17th Senate District as I attend dairy breakfasts, picnics and community events this summer. Everyone is worried about the rising costs of gas and groceries. Farmers are concerned about the rising costs for inputs such as fertilizer and raw materials. Businesses continue to struggle with supply chain disruptions and rising costs too. The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) recently distributed an article that perfectly illustrates the strain on our pocketbooks. In Wisconsin, it costs approximately $69.74 to host a picnic for 10 people this
