Hi, this is Rep. Beth Meyers with this week’s Democratic Radio Address.
In just a few weeks we will be celebrating Veteran’s Day, when legislators are often invited to speak at events honoring the brave men and women who answered the call to defend our freedom and our country.
The sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make is immense.
It’s important to find the right words to honor our veterans, but it is even more important to make sure that our actions speak as loudly as our words.
My Democratic colleagues and I believe we can, and must, do better than speeches and wreaths.
The Republicans, who control the Legislature, are sitting on close to $5 billion in surplus funds, yet refused our efforts to spend $350,000 on a program to recover and identify missing-in-action American service members.
Gov. Tony Evers put that funding in his last budget, but the Republicans took it out.
While funding programs that help recover and identify missing-in-action service members shouldn’t even be in questions, there is so much more we could be doing.
Thankfully, the governor isn’t going to let Republican foot dragging stop him from helping veterans.
Just this week, he announced he will invest $10 million to support employment, housing assistance and mental health services for veterans.
Gov. Evers’ actions speak as loud as his words when he says that he is committed to both honoring and helping Wisconsin’s veterans.
And we stand united with him in this commitment.
