Thanksgiving is here and many of us will be gathering with family to celebrate. Some of us may be ready to just relax over a long weekend and watch some football, some may be looking forward to lively discussions with some of their family members. Though partisan differences may divide in Madison, through it all, there is much to be thankful for this holiday season.

I am thankful for free and fair elections. While many seek to attack our voting system because they are having trouble winning elections based on their views, I know the system we have in place works and that democracy prevails- whether or not the candidates in my party prevail. We must do what we can to uphold the democratic ideals of the American Republic, and it starts with ensuring free and fair elections.

I am thankful for Wisconsin’s natural beauty, and especially Wisconsin’s state parks. Year round, they provide an opportunity to connect with nature. Whether someone is looking to picnic, hike, canoe, kayak, bike, or simply sit and enjoy the view, Wisconsin parks offer some the most beautiful scenery in the country.

I am thankful to have been the Representative for the 46th District in the Wisconsin State Assembly for 18 years. I have done my best to prioritize the needs of my constituents in the state capitol- from fighting for education funding, working to ensure fair districts and strengthening democracy, to protecting our environment. It has been the honor of my lifetime to fight for what is right for my constituents. I am forever thankful that you have chosen me to represent you in Madison for nearly two decades.

Most of all, I am thankful for my family. I will get to spend even more time with them after my retirement from the legislature, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.

I look forward to spending Thanksgiving with my family, sharing stories and catching up. I hope that you all will be able to do the same. I wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.

– Hebl, D-Sun Prairie, represents the 46th Assembly District.
