(FITCHBURG) – Today the Wisconsin State Assembly passed Senate Joint Resolution 2, a constitutional amendment that would rework Wisconsin’s current bail system. The amendment will now go before the voters of Wisconsin on the April ballot for approval. Rep. Jimmy Anderson (D-Fitchburg) released the following statement in opposition to the proposed amendment:

Simply put, this amendment is not the right solution when it comes to bail reform. If enacted, this amendment will worsen economic disparities in our criminal justice system, expand Wisconsin’s already bloated prison population, and continue to allow dangerous people to buy their way back onto the streets.

If Republicans truly cared about community safety, they would take this opportunity to enact real bill reform rather than rushing this half-baked constitutional amendment out the door.
