(MADISON) –Today, the Assembly met in regular session to take up a bail constitutional amendment.

Representative Conley released the following statement:

“Rather than using the first day of session to act on the will of the people, Republicans proposed a politically-motivated referendum that doesn’t provide any meaningful progress to meet Wisconsin’s needs.

“There is no question that we all want to live in safe communities without fear of violence. There is also no question that the cash bail system is broken. However, we must invest in proven strategies to reduce violent crime and recidivism. Our justice system should not continue to favor those with the resources to post bail. We need to look at successful models that better assess risk and develop a long term, evidence-based solution to the problem,” Rep. Conley stated.
