(Madison, WI). State Representative William Penterman (R – Columbus) released the following statement on the successful passage of Senate Joint Resolution 2 to amend the Wisconsin State Constitution regarding bail.

“Currently, bail is set only as a way to ensure an individual convicted of a crime returns to court,” said Representative Penterman. “The resolution approved by the State Assembly would allow court officials to consider a defendant’s risk to public safety when setting bail.”

“If the citizens of Wisconsin pass this amendment to the State Constitution in the April 4th election, there will no longer be an excuse why violent career criminals with numerous convictions are released back in Wisconsin’s communities with just a signature bond or inappropriately low bail.”

“This resolution is about the need to protect the public from serious harm. It is a huge step in the right direction in giving Wisconsin’s judges the discretion to keep violent career criminals off of our streets.”

Representative Penterman’s office is located at 207 North at the Wisconsin State Capitol. He can be reached at (608) 237-9137 or by e-mail at Rep.Penterman@legis.wisconsin.gov.

The 37th Assembly District includes portions of Dane, Columbia, Dodge and Jefferson Counties.
