Madison, WI – On Wednesday, the Legislature convened in the Assembly Chambers to hear Governor Evers’ budget address. Senator Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk), a member of the budget-writing Joint Committee on Finance, made the following comments on his address:

“Heading into our third budget with Governor Evers in control of the Executive Branch, we had a pretty good grasp on what ideas he was going to propose. Many of these divisive concepts have been proposed in the past, and he knows they will not be included in the final budget bill – yet he continues to push them for his base. While this seems to go against his plea for both branches to work together and set politics aside, I can look past that.

If Governor Evers wanted to work together with the Legislature, his address tonight would have sounded much different. He would have proposed fiscally-responsible spending that doesn’t put our state in the same financial hole we fought to get out of at the end of the Doyle Administration. He would have refrained from trying to jam divisive policy proposals into a budget bill, and instead, let these ideas go through the democratic legislative process. And he would have had a larger focus on getting hard-earned taxpayer dollars back to where they belong – in your own pocket.

I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues and the people of Wisconsin over the next few months as we craft a responsible budget that funds our statewide priorities, addresses our obligations, cuts your taxes, and prepares Wisconsin for a bright fiscal future.
