The ballooning federal deficit combined with our exponentially increasing national debt stand tall as two of the biggest crises facing American citizens today. While Washington has long lacked any fiscal responsibility, there is a glimmer of hope as President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill has passed the House and heads to the Senate. While various provisions will be up for debate even among Republicans, one provision that should receive unanimous support is the one to close the double duty drawback tax loophole.

This loophole is the result of a minor policy change Congress enacted more than 20 years ago that has allowed foreign cigarette manufacturers to claim refunds on taxes they haven’t actually paid. Badger State residents have been helping subsidize these companies, paying the tab on a bill that’s expected to cost $12 billion over the next decade. The GOP tax package would close the loophole, stopping American taxpayers from funding foreign businesses and helping significantly reduce the deficit.

This presents an opportunity for Republicans to be who they say they are and enact a sensible and fiscally responsible reform that’s long overdue. I hope Sen. Ron Johnson stays true to his constituents and helps make sure that closing the double duty drawback loophole receives the support it deserves in the Senate.
