Whether you’re hitting the water or taking out the ATV/UTV for a spin, be sure to make safety part of your Memorial Day Weekend plans.

Wearing a life jacket on the water and a Department of Transportation-approved helmet on the ATV/UTV trails (and a seatbelt if you’re in a UTV) can make all the difference between a fun-filled weekend and a tragedy.

Besides wearing the proper safety gear, the biggest thing you can do to protect yourself, your loved ones and other recreators is to stay sober while driving a boat or riding a recreation vehicle. Consuming alcohol or drugs while recreating can slow your reaction time, blur your judgement and reduce your abilities.

Follow these safety tips below and enjoy Wisconsin’s great lakes, rivers and trails with family and friends this weekend!

Boaters

  • Always wear a properly fitted and fastened life jacket when on or near the water.
  • Be cautious around shorelines and sandbars, which pose unseen dangers. Higher, fast-moving water can tax an individual’s boating, paddling and swimming skills.
  • Keep an eye on the weather.
  • Create a float plan and tell people when and where you plan to depart and return before going for a float or paddle.

ATV/UTV Riders

  • Always wear a DOT-approved helmet.
  • Always wear a seatbelt in a UTV.
  • Follow all posted speed limits and regulatory signs.
  • Do not travel in unfamiliar areas.
  • Let someone not riding with you know where you are going and when you will return.

Note: A DNR-approved ATV/UTV safety course is required for operators at least age 12 and born after Jan. 1, 1988. A Wisconsin boating safety certification or out-of-state equivalent certification is required for operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1989. Learn more about DNR regulations and safety classes online
