Since before its official statehood, Hispanic Americans have lived and worked in Wisconsin, enriching the economic, social, and cultural climates of our great state. Today, the Hispanic community represents just under 20% of the United States’ population, and almost 8% of Wisconsin’s population. From farm labor to entrepreneurship to military service, Hispanic Americans have undeniably influenced Wisconsin communities.
The newly established Wisconsin Hispanic Legislative Caucus introduced a joint resolution to recognize September 15th to October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month and honor the accomplishments and contributions of the Latino community in Wisconsin and the U.S. The date of September 15th holds significance to many Latin nations as it is the anniversary of their independence, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate independence during the month of September.
My decision to reinvigorate the Hispanic Caucus and organize a Hispanic Heritage Month can be explained by this mantra—¡Juntos hacemos más! Together, we do more. As Chair of the WHLC, I will continue to be that fervent voice for the Hispanic community, one that refuses to compromise core beliefs for short-term successes, and reflects the lived experience and priorities shared by our neighbors. The work is far from finished, but I’m proud to stand alongside so many who are committed to moving our community forward.

The goal of Hispanic Heritage Month is not just to celebrate our culture, but to come together in support of one another, recognizing those leaders who came before us and how their contributions laid out a roadmap of progress. Honoring firsts is a way to show our respect and gratitude, while uplifting the voices of those who exemplify the integrity, values, and leadership of our communities.
For the first time ever, the WHLC is hosting a variety of events at the Wisconsin State Capitol throughout the month to highlight the impressive and vibrant history, food, art, and service of Hispanic Americans. Most notably, Hispanic Heritage Month festivities will commence on Wednesday, September 17th with live music, dancers, food, and messages from some of Wisconsin’s prominent Hispanic leaders and heroes. All events are open to the public.
