May 28, 2026, MILWAUKEE, WI   Today, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted 16 to 2 to pass Resolution 26-447, condemning the detention of community leader Salah Sarsour and demanding his immediate release from federal custody.

The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance (WMCA) applauds the Board’s decisive action and extends a special thank you to Supervisor Caroline Gómez-Tom, the lead author of this resolution, whose leadership and commitment to justice made this moment possible.

WMCA also extends its heartfelt gratitude to all 16 supervisors who voted YES:

Leevan D. Roundtree Jr., Anne O’Connor, Sky Z. Capriolo, Jack Eckblad, Justin Bielinski, Caroline Gómez-Tom, Juan Miguel Martinez, Kathleen Vincent, Felesia A. Martin, Shawn Rolland, Sheldon A. Wasserman, Steve F. Taylor, Willie Johnson Jr., Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones, Steven Shea, and Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson-Bovell.

Your courage, your voice, and your commitment to justice will be remembered.

“The community showed up, and the board listened,” said Fauzia Qureshi, Executive Director of WMCA. “This vote sends a clear message: Milwaukee County will not stay silent in the face of injustice.”

In today’s proceedings Supervisor Kathleen Vincent declared that this is not a federal issue, it is a human issue. Supervisor Vincent reminded the chamber that Mr. Sarsour’s rights have been stripped away from him, and that what has happened to him could happen to any one of us. Her words echoed a truth our community has long held: an injustice to one is an injustice to all.

However, WMCA notes with deep concern that both NO votes came from Supervisor Patti Logsdon and Supervisor Deanne Alexander. Supervisor Logsdon, Salah Sarsour’s own county supervisor, who recently defeated Dr. Maqsood Khan, and Supervisor Alexander chose to turn their backs on the very community they were elected to represent.

Salah Sarsour remains in federal custody since March 30, 2026. WMCA will continue to advocate relentlessly for his release and for the protection of every community member’s constitutional rights.
