MADISON – Tonight, Governor Tony Evers delivered his State of the Budget address and laid out his vision to invest in the future of Wisconsin.
Gov. Evers’ 2023-2025 biennial budget proposal would accomplish the following:
- Expand renter protections and increase access to civil legal aid, which includes $60 million over the biennium to establish a right to counsel for low-income individuals facing eviction.
- Invest an additional $2.6 billion in public schools including a new “Do the Math” personal finance initiative that allocates $2.5 million per year to help schools start or improve financial literacy curriculum.
- Implement Driver’s Licenses for All to expand driver education and licensure regardless of documentation status, and create safer roadways by investing $60 million to allow communities to improve the physical design of their roadways to curb reckless driving.

“My constituents sent me to the Capitol with the understanding that those who are impacted by challenges are the closest to the solutions. We need policies that are crafted by and for impacted communities across Wisconsin. I applaud Governor Evers for crafting an intersectional budget that will use our historic state budget surplus to address the key needs of people across Wisconsin.
Governor Evers continues to prioritize building safe, sustainable, and thriving communities in every corner of our state. This intersectional approach to public safety requires expanding access to housing, workforce opportunities, education, and more. By investing in civil legal aides we can support working-families’ abilities to navigate our legal system in places where they do not traditionally get support. Investments in education, including investments in financial literacy that communities of color have advocated in support of for decades, will help the 45,220 adults and 14,700 children that live in District 10. Finally, Drivers Licenses for All will provide new and meaningful opportunities to the undocumented population in Wisconsin. I am committed to fighting to ensure that these commitments are honored throughout the budget process.”
