MILWAUKEE – Supervisor Eckblad issued the following statement after the passing of a resolution condemning the detention of Salah Sarsour, demanding his immediate release from federal custody, and calling for the protection of his constitutional due process rights.
“Throughout the Trump Administration, we have witnessed state-sponsored violence of badly trained federal ICE, DHS, and ICB officers being visited upon communities across our country – most often targeting our most vulnerable neighbors.
“I am proud that today the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that declares that the residents of Milwaukee County have not forgotten – and will not forget – the harm that has been done across this country; harm to children, families, immigrants, citizens, and non-citizens alike, and most without any criminal charge or conviction.
“Moreover, this resolution declares that we will not forget the example of communities like Hennepin County, and cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul. Those communities met thoughtless violence with intentional peaceful actions, resisted unmitigated cruelty with boundless compassion for their neighbors, and proved that it is possible to insist on our rights.
“The resolution the Milwaukee County Board passed today encourages residents to emulate the example of these communities who rallied around one another, educated themselves on their rights and how to exercise them, and created lawful, intentional plans for safeguarding one another. The extent to which we peacefully exercise our rights is the extent to which we will retain them. Even in the face of reckless and violent federal agents. I am grateful for my colleagues who supported this resolution.”
