Recent reports about taxpayer-funded transgender-themed dolls developed through the University of Minnesota Medical School have sparked concerns among many parents regarding parental rights, child development, and the role of public institutions in shaping young children’s understanding of identity. These concerns highlight the importance of ensuring that parents remain the primary influence in their children’s lives and education.

Many families worry that introducing dolls designed to reflect changes associated with a different gender identity may send confusing messages about self-worth and acceptance. Rather than encouraging children to embrace who they are, such materials may unintentionally suggest that physical changes are necessary to align with a particular identity. Parents want children to develop confidence, healthy self-esteem, and appreciation for their unique qualities without feeling pressure to alter themselves.

Research in child development shows that preschool-aged children are still developing the cognitive skills needed to understand complex concepts related to identity. Experts recognize that very young children often express thoughts and concerns based on curiosity, imitation, or developmental exploration rather than fixed beliefs about themselves. For this reason, many believe educational materials should remain age-appropriate and focused on emotional well-being.

As I, Simran Arora, run for Wisconsin State Assembly District 80, I am committed to protecting children and defending parental rights. I believe taxpayer dollars should support education, mental health services, and programs that help children thrive. Evidence-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help children build resilience, confidence, and self-acceptance.

Together, we can create a Wisconsin where families are respected, children are supported, and public resources are invested in strengthening education, mental health, and the well-being of future generations. Let’s keep Wisconsin true to its values and not allow Wisconsin to become Minnesota.
