Barnes, Kober knock Foxconn, praise ‘Wisconsin Idea’

Lt. guv candidates Mandela Barnes and Kurt Kober both praised the “Wisconsin Idea” and slammed the $4.5 billion public incentive package to bring Foxconn to Racine County in their pitches to Dem activists. Kober, a businessman, said Gov. Scott Walker has destroyed the state’s legacy, but there is an opportunity to reclaim the state. He asked the crowd to imagine if the state didn’t force every Wisconsin household to pay “$1,800 to a foreign corporation,” a reference to Foxconn. “Imagine if we supported public education,” Kober said. “Imagine if we supported a spirit of entrepreneurship in our state. Imagine if

State treasurer candidates pledge to make better use of office’s current responsibilities

The three Dems running for state treasurer pledged to take advantage of the current responsibilities the post has to aid all individuals across the state. The candidates — Sarah Godlewski, Cynthia Kaump and Dawn Marie Sass — also highlighted the overwhelming rejection of a referendum to eliminate the office in April, where some 61 percent of voters shot down a move that would have nixed the post that has existed since Wisconsin was a territory. While Kaump and Sass called for restoring responsibilities to the office, which has been stripped of much of its authority over the past several decades,

Underdog congressional candidates make their pitch

The Dems who run in the 5th, 7th and 8th CDs will likely face uphill battles in their races against GOP incumbents this fall. And Tom Palzewicz, a Navy vet and small business owner, didn’t shy away from it. He joked with Dem delegates about how tough the sledding is in the 5th CD, where he’s challenging GOP Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, who first won the seat in 1979. He said some clients he’s told he’s running respond by closing the door, leaning over and whispering, “I’m a Democrat, too.” When he told some in the business community he was going to

1st CD Dems slam Steil in speeches

The two Dems running for the 1st CD slammed Republican Bryan Steil in their speeches at the state Dem convention this morning, as they called on convention-goers to help flip the seat. Longtime high school English teacher Cathy Myers knocked Steil, a corporate attorney and UW System Board of Regents member, for his support of “Scott Walker’s plan to dismantle our cherished UW System.” She said Steil likewise would “be a rubber stamp on Trump’s agenda in Washington.” And Randy Bryce characterized Steil as someone who “has no idea what it’s like to fall on hard times,” as he contrasted

La Follette, Martin push for restoring responsibilities to secretary of state’s office

Secretary of State Doug La Follette and primary challenger Marvina Martin bemoaned GOP-authored changes that have stripped the office of many responsibilities. But they offered Dem activists slightly different solutions. La Follette urged the state convention to elect more Dem lawmakers to reverse the damage done, while Martin argued a change was needed in who’s leading the office. La Follette said if a Dem is also elected state treasurer, they would campaign to restore duties to both those offices, and electing Dems to the Legislature would help restore Wisconsin’s progressive tradition. He also took a dig at Gov. Scott Walker,
